Call for free to Chile
Universal feels deeply for the victims of the recent earthquake in Chile. During the first two weeks of March 2010 we are allowing our customers to make free calls to Chilean mobiles and fixed lines. This offer is valid until the 14th of March 2010 for all Universal residential phone customers.

Please note that it does not apply to calls made from your mobile and that the normal start fee per call still applies.

Universal donates € 10 000 to AMI - Assistência Médica Internacional’s efforts in Madeira
It is still hard to fathom the extent of the damages after the devastating storm that hit on the 20th of February. The rescue work is still ongoing and it continues to be difficult to reach everyone who’s in need. A lot of areas are still covered in mud, rocks, scrap and other things that came down with the water. Also the number of injured and dead is difficult to obtain at this moment. Madeira is considered by many to be the poorest area of Portugal and this catastrophe has hit hard against those who already were vulnerable. We know that at least 600 people got their homes destroyed. The donation from Universal to AMI will go to alleviate the situation for the homeless and the injured. We thank our customers who make this donation possible.

We are open again
The intense rescue and cleanup work is still ongoing here at Madeira where we have received help from the Portuguese mainland. It is clear that the work will be ongoing for quite some time and the situation is haunting. Parts of the island are still without water, electricity and ways of getting basic supplies. The constant risk of more landslides and the damages to the road network make the work even more difficult. We are expecting more hard weather in the coming days, but all hope that we will not see again what happened on Saturday. Our office is back with electricity and we are ready to answer your calls on 0800 279 9809 Monday to Thursday from 8am until 5pm o'clock and Friday from 8am until 4pm. Due to ongoing issues in the Portuguese phone network we cannot receive faxes at the moment.

Only limited ways of reaching our Customer Service.
The main city of Madeira, Funchal, where our Customer Service is located, is flooded after the catastrophic storm that swept in over the island this weekend. Many areas are missing electricity and water; parts of the island are isolated due landslides and collapsed roads and bridges. At least 40 people have been killed and over 150 are reported missing. Due to these conditions we are unable to answer your calls at the moment.

Universal donated £60 000 to Médicine Sans Frontièrs’ work in Haiti
The devastating earthquake on the 12th of January has claimed a high number of deaths and injuries. Universals contribution to MSF will be used for medications, ambulance services and medical staff. We thank our customers who have made the gift possible.
